There's nothing special about chat in Warframe. It's just making a regular TCP connection to our chat (IRC) servers for you to send and receive messages.
Temporarily use an alternative internet connection
The easiest way to troubleshoot this issue is to temporarily connect to an alternative internet connection in order to play Warframe (ie. cellphone hotspot or your neighbor/friends' internet).
If this is not an option, you can also troubleshoot all of the options below which cover the main causes of chat errors.
If the chat issues go away while using an alternative internet connection the problem might be due to your router/modem or even on the ISP's side.
-
Check your router/modem:
- Check the router for the latest firmware updates.
- Check the firewall on your router. If it has an option, whitelist Warframe. Alternatively, you can temporarily disable the firewall of the router and then test chat in-game. Make sure your PC's firewall is running during this test.
- Disable Stateful Packet Inspection on the router (a form of firewall).
-
Disable Quality of Service (QoS) engine on the router.
Re-enable the setting changes in steps 2 to 4 after testing
- If your router and modem are separate devices bypass the router entirely and connect your PC/console directly to the modem/cable provided by the ISP.
- Contact your ISP: If nothing works, that means you might have some problem with your internet connection. Please contact your ISP to resolve this issue.
If the chat issues persist while using the alternative internet connection there are several possibilities:
-
Antivirus or firewall issues: Firewall or routing software/hardware will generally have advanced settings to prioritize and manage types of network traffic. Sometimes this software can interfere with the delivery of data for Warframe. Fixing it can be as simple as telling that software to allow Warframe through its filters.
- Add an exception to all of your firewall and anti-virus software (including Windows Firewall) for "Warframe.x64.exe".
- Also please make sure to check your proxy settings: search for Internet Options on the Windows Control Panel, click on the “Connections – LAN Settings” tab and make sure that the “use automatic configuration script” and “proxy server” options are UN-checked.
-
Alternatively, if you are using a third-party firewall you can test temporarily disabling it to see if you're able to chat again. If so, contact the program's support team for assistance configuring it for Warframe.
Remember to re-enable the firewall after completing this test
- If you are running a proxy or VPN, we recommend disabling these as well to confirm if the traffic they are routing is interfering with chat.
-
Third-Party Software Conflicts: Sometimes other programs running in the background of your PC can interfere with the chat connection as well. You may not even be aware of them depending on the type of software it is. By temporarily disabling these programs from booting, they can be eliminated as the source of the problem.
This article provided by Microsoft will give you more detailed instructions on how to troubleshoot this kind of problem: How to perform a clean boot in Windows
Please follow reverse the steps above to reset the computer to start normally after testing.
- Corrupted Windows networking settings - You can attempt to fix this with the following steps:
-
- On the Start screen, type CMD. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
- At the command prompt, type the following command: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and then press Enter
- Type ipconfig /release and press Enter. (please skip this step if you have a static LAN IP)
- Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter. (please skip this step if you have a static LAN IP)
- Reboot the computer.
If you have tried everything above and the issues are still there, even though it is very rare, but it still could be both you and your neighbour/friends' internet are suffering from the same issue especially if all of you are using the same ISP. Contact your ISP and ask for assistance from them to fix your internet.
